Trail Overview
This scenic loop trail at Taughannock Falls State Park combines the North and South Rim Trails into a moderately challenging walk with fantastic views of Taughannock Falls — the tallest single-drop waterfall east of the Rockies. Starting from the quieter Jacksonville Road entrance, the loop follows the gorge rim, offering overlooks from both sides and a peaceful forested experience.
Unlike the popular Gorge Trail that brings you to the base of the falls, this hike offers elevated views and more solitude, especially early in the day or off-season.
What You’ll See
- Taughannock Falls from multiple scenic overlooks
- Forested ridgelines and gorge views
- Birds, wildflowers, and shaded woodland paths
- Seasonal stream views and valley vistas
- Sections of the Rim Trail’s iconic stonework
Trail Notes
- Trailhead: Jacksonville Road parking area (upper entrance, less traffic)
- Direction Tip: Hike clockwise (start with the North Rim) for a gentler descent and dramatic falls reveal
- Dogs: Allowed on leash
- Best Season: Spring through fall, and beautiful in winter with microspikes
- Surface: Mixed dirt and gravel with some roots and stairs
- Tip: After looping back to your car, consider driving down to the Gorge Trail for a quick walk to the base of the falls — it’s flat and only ~1 mile round trip
