Trail Overview
One of the most iconic hikes in Ithaca, the Buttermilk Falls Gorge and Rim Trail Loop is short but spectacular. Starting with a dramatic waterfall at the base, the trail climbs a series of stone steps alongside cascades, pools, and sculpted rock walls. Once you reach the rim, the trail offers a more peaceful woodland walk before looping back down to the gorge. It’s a great choice if you’re looking for a hike that packs a lot of scenery into a manageable distance. Park at the top if you’d rather climb after walking down.
What You’ll See
- Buttermilk Falls right at the trailhead
- A series of smaller cascades and pools carved into the gorge
- Shale and sandstone cliffs showcasing the region’s geology
- Hardwood forest along the rim trail, especially colorful in fall
- Opportunities to spot songbirds and chipmunks along the quieter sections
Trail Notes
- Parking: Main entrance off Route 13 (daily parking fee during peak season).
- Dog Rules: Dogs are welcome but must be leashed. Be prepared for steep stairs and drop-offs.
- Best Season: Summer and fall for flowing water and foliage. Spring can be muddy; winter access may be limited.
