Trail Overview
The Cayuga Trail is a nearly 10-mile loop weaving through the Monkey Run Natural Area and Cornell Botanic Gardens in Ithaca. It’s a moderately challenging route with a little bit of everything: wooded paths, creekside stretches, and open sections that keep things interesting. While it’s a popular trail, there are still plenty of moments of quiet to enjoy. Whether you’re hiking, running, or even snowshoeing in winter, this is a trail that shines year-round.
What You’ll See
- Hardwood forests: Home to oaks, maples, and beeches.
- Wildflowers: Expect trillium and spring ephemerals in season.
- Wildlife: From warblers and woodpeckers to butterflies and deer.
Trail Notes
- Parking: Trailheads accessible near Route 366 and Route 13 as well as the Cornell Arboretum and Flat Rock area; look for small lots and road pull-offs.
- Dogs: Allowed and may be off-leash in some areas.
- Best Season: All seasons work — spring brings blooms, summer shade, fall color, and winter snowshoeing.
- Surface Notes: Mostly dirt and forest floor; expect muddy sections and brief stretches along busy roads.
- Tip: Bring water and plan for the full loop — it’s longer than it looks and can feel challenging if you’re unprepared.
