A classic Hammond Hill loop with peaceful forest, rolling elevation, and a side of solitude
Just east of Ithaca, this scenic loop weaves through the Hammond Hill State Forest—one of the region’s go-to spots for year-round outdoor recreation. The Star Stanton Hill and Hammond Hill Loop blends sections of wide multi-use trails with narrower forest paths, offering a bit of everything: meadows, maples, conifers, and occasional wildlife sightings. It’s well-marked, uncrowded, and ideal for a quiet hike, run, or even a snowshoe in the winter. Lots of additional trails so you can add or subtract distance as needed.
What You’ll See
- Peaceful hardwood and conifer forest
- Meadows and seasonal wildflowers
- Occasional mountain bikers or trail runners
- Possible deer, birds, or even foxes if you’re early or lucky
Trail Notes
- Parking: Park at the Hammond Hill Road lot. There’s usually space, but no restrooms.

- Best Season: Spring through late fall. Beautiful snowshoeing and cross-country skiing in winter.
- Surface Notes: Some uneven terrain and roots, but mostly easy-to-follow forest paths.
- Pro Tip: Download the trail map in advance—while most junctions are marked, it helps to stay oriented.
